NuvaRing is a contraceptive vaginal ring that is marketed as providing month long birth control, which is claimed to be more convenient than taking a daily pill. The ring releases a relatively high amount of estrogen and progestin that is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Desogestrel NuvaRing releases a high level of Etonogestrel, a metabolite of the progestin desogestrel, which is believed to be more dangerous than previous generations of progestin. This combination, considered to be a “third generation” progestin, causes a significant increased risk of venous thromboembolism, or serious blood clots. In 2007, Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to ban third-generation oral contraceptives that contained desogestrel.
