For the third year running, Whatley Drake and Kallas will be sponsoring the Race for the Cure in the Birmingham area. Not only is WDK serving as a sponsor, but WDK will also be sponsoring a race team as well. The 18th Annual Race for the Cure at Linn Park in downtown Birmingham, Alabama takes place on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Few Alabama traditions touch the hearts of so many like the Komen North Central Alabama Race for the Cure. Every year thousands of people come out to give moms, dads, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons and friends the gift of life, support and hope.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. 26 years later, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the global leader in the fight against breast cancer and is the world’s largest private funder of breast cancer research and community outreach programs. The Birmingham Affiliate was formed in 1994 by a group of concerned professionals and breast cancer survivors who were committed to saving and improving the lives of those affected by breast cancer. The Affiliate officially changed its name to the North Central Alabama Affiliate in 2003 to better reflect the 38 counties that comprise our service area. Where the money goes - The Susan G. Komen for the Cure provides funds to eliminate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by funding national Research Grant Programs and by funding screening, treatment, and education (STEP) programs within the affiliate’s community. 75% of our Affiliate’s net income stays in the area to fund local projects. In 2008, Komen was able to provide more than $500,000 to support community-based screening, treatment, and breast health education programs in our area. Additionaly the Komen North Central Alabama Affilaite contributed $193,000 to the Komen for the Cure National Research Grant Program - which has funded over $7 million in research funds to UAB for innovative research to find the cures for breast cancer.
